In the episode, as Nucky is recovering from his concussion and hallucinating, he makes a sarcastic comment involving Nellie Bly. It happens when he’s being told about the letter from Gyp Rosetti (the mocking threat), and Nucky — disoriented but still sharp — mutters something along the lines of: "Who brought me this, Nellie Bly?"

He’s referencing the famous investigative journalist in a sardonic tone — essentially mocking the drama of the situation, as if he's the subject of some dramatic exposé or tale. It’s a quick, clever nod, typical of Boardwalk Empire’s writing, packed with historical references.

In Boardwalk Empire Season 3, Episode 9 ("The Milkmaid's Lot"), there's a letter sent to Nucky Thompson that plays a significant role.

After surviving a bombing (at Babette’s in the previous episode), Nucky is recovering and struggling with a concussion, hallucinations, and hearing issues. During this time, he receives a letter from Gyp Rosetti, which is essentially a mocking threat.

The letter reads:

"You tell ’em Nuck: The only thing you run is your mouth."
Yours truly, Gyp

This taunt infuriates Nucky and serves as a turning point. It reinforces Gyp’s challenge to Nucky's power and triggers Nucky to finally rally his allies (including Rothstein and Chalky White) to take action against Gyp and Masseria. The letter highlights the escalating war between Nucky and Gyp, and how personal it's become.
