Boardwalk Empire: Richard Harrow’s HERO Paper with the Sagorski Family Address
Episode: Season 3, Episode 6 – “Ging Gang Goolie”
In Boardwalk Empire Season 3, Episode 6 (“Ging Gang Goolie”), Richard Harrow is seen holding a hero prop — a piece of paper containing the address of the Sagorski family. This small but emotionally powerful item plays a key role in Richard’s storyline in the episode.
Context & Significance:
- The paper contains the home address of Paul Sagorski, the father of a deceased war buddy of Richard’s.
- Richard travels to their home in Wisconsin to return personal effects and pay his respects, showcasing his deep sense of honor and the trauma he still carries from World War I.
- This moment introduces the Sagorski family, especially Paul and his daughter Julia Sagorski, who will go on to become an important part of Richard’s life.
- As a hero prop, the paper was likely custom-made for close-up shots, featuring handwriting or typewriter text consistent with the 1920s period, making it a detailed and authentic piece of on-screen storytelling.
This simple slip of paper represents duty, loss, and connection—themes central to Richard Harrow’s character arc. It also serves as a turning point in his journey, as his interaction with the Sagorskis begins to pull him out of isolation and toward the hope of a new life.
After the war, Harrow returned home to Wisconsin where his twin sister, Emma, provided care for him as his wounds healed. He had a very close relationship with his sister growing up, but found it difficult to reconnect with her after being exposed to the horrors of war. Soon after he was well enough to care for himself, Harrow left to live in Chicago. It is there, in an army hospital, where he meets Jimmy Darmody. After feeling an instant kinship through their shared war experiences, Jimmy invites Harrow to stay with him to become a part of his bootlegging crew. His duties generally include keeping guard while Jimmy negotiates deals, delivering liquor orders and being a hitman when situations call for it.
Harrow keeps a scrapbook of pictures found in GQ and newspapers of family, sweethearts and houses. He alludes to wanting a family of his own, but has spoken of how difficult it is to connect with another human being on a deeper level due to his injuries.
This prop was used on screen in the hit HBO television series Boardwalk Empire, and it comes with a certificate of authenticity.
